Welcome to the Northern Sydney Region

Computer Co-ordinators Wiki

The aim of this wiki is for the NSRCC's to spread their considerable knowledge and pedagogical skill about software being used in schools.

Please add to the comments on the pages on the side bar. If there is an issue about specific software please create a page and leave a comment I've started one example with Max's Tool Box. Please leave an idea of what it is, it's strengths, weakness and how it can be used.

Hope this is a 'chat page' - I cant find anything about preferred suppliers/IT contracts for network printers - nothing on the https://detwww.det.nsw.edu.au/it/equipment/hardware_stds/specs.htm page .... is there a list of 'allowable' printers for NSR remotely managed schools? We have fuji xerox and really want to stick with them I guess maybe, even though the models we have here aren't current any more

Hi Danka,

The information you require is available on the Procurement website located at https://detwww.det.nsw.edu.au/procurement/products/index.htm , and Fuji Xerox is on the contract.

Hope it Helps.

Hi Danka - the DET standard is HP or Lexmark for printers and Fuji Xerox for coppiers - For remote services we prefer the HP printers as they tend to be strights forward in regards to software and drivers - http://hardware.det.nsw.edu.au/Printers/printers.htm

Software List updated – 6/03/2009
http://www.nthbeachesd.det.nsw.edu.au/technology/Software.htm
Please note: New Software package release is currently on hold, due to lack of storage space on the notification server. Reconfiguration of the data store so as to increase capacity is planned for the coming school holidays. However a review of released / aged packages is becoming increasingly necessary

(for want of a chat page...) We're currently ordering a new HP printer through procurement. The price includes installation and setup, however, I believe that we can't allow HP access to our (print) server to do this. Is there a procedure for getting the installation completed and tested on the day that HP turn up? I am assuming that all printers on procurement site are available for NSR remote management users.

Hi Danka,
Once the Printer is in the school, HP can unpack it, plug in power and lan then if you log a helpdesk call one of our Regional Support staff will contact you and get the printer setup.

Has anyone found a 'free' media converter that really works? I don't think there is an enterprise agreement for one and I need to convert .MOD files to AVI or WMV. Yes I have searched the Internet and tried some products, but I can't see anything that is REALLY freeware and converts the file without leaving out sound or putting freeware stuff all over it.

Re podcasting - I know we don't have amples of disc space, but what (if any) podcatcher software do NSR remotely managed schools use? I can't see iTunes or Juice for instance....(sorry for all the postings lately)

have you tried podbean...it is a web2.0 tool. Not sure but I don't think it is blocked for staff, not sure about students.

re file converters...did you try http://www.zamzar.com/? i'd be interested in your response here. I use it frequently.

thanks deb, but zamzar doesn't like .mod files, i'm looking at 'prism' at the moment... it's all a bit of a pain - we do a lot of windows movie maker stuff at school but it wont import .mod which is a bit of a standard with DV at the moment, thanks anyway

Hi

I promised Danka I would make an entry on this wiki.
Question for everyone ... we have had Notebook 10 installed and I have been asked to source "Lesson Activity Toolkit version 2".
I have donwloaded this from the smarttech site. Has anyone installed this yet? Is it ok for me to do so? Any known issues?

thanks ... Matthew

Matthew, great to have another contributor, whilst it looks like its just the three of us, I hope one day to encourage everyone to participate, without input its hard to convince other managers that software is a major concern in our schools, I guess with your input I can now claim there has been a 50% increase in the level of interest.
In regards to the Lesson Activity Toolkit version 2 – this has been available to regions for testing for some weeks now, however it has had to wait until resources became available, we (NSR) have now volunteered to do this, if the package passes all checks, I will notify all schools when it becomes available – David Millington

Thanks David.
I will not install unless I get the go-ahead.
Cheers ... Matthew
P.S. My daughter was top scorer in her netball team netting 50% of their goals this season. She got 1! Statistics - don't you love 'em

I have added Activity Toolkit version 2 to my Library computers. Each individually and have had no problems with any of them.

someone wants to create mp3 files of students speaking to attach to a Notebook page (Notebook only seems to accept mp3). I tried using Audacity but when I try to export as mp3 it comes up with the message
"Audacity does not export MP3 files directly .... use LAME library. obtain lame_enc.dll by downloading the LAME MP3 encoder and locate this file for Audacity"
Has anyone done this ... any issues?
Or does anyone know another easy record in MP3 format program?
In the meantime I have converted the .wav files that Audacity made at home with WavePad.

thanks ... Matthew

Just thought I would let you know that I am out here reading your contributions. I don't have any answers for you... or any questions at the moment. I have now changed the statistics for you.

Mat,
Google Lame_enc.dll download it and place it somewhere on your server where everyone has permission to get to. Point audacity there once and you'll be fine to output as .mp3

I have someone that wants to bring their own laptop from home to work and connect the device directly to the DET network using an ethernet cable. What is the policy around this? I have had a rummage and can not find a yes/no and wanted to check before I let them on. In my previous employment 'external' PCs were not to be connected to the company's network. Thanks .. Matthew

Matthew, it is DET policy that no privately owned device can be connected to the DET WAN / LAN

David, can you point me to the document which states that no personal devices can be connected to the DET WAN

Sharon, I guess you are fully aware there is no actual formal statement to this effect, however the guidelines clearly outline the conditions required, frankly there are few situations where a none DET machine will meet all conditions, the guidelines can be downloaded from https://www.det.nsw.edu.au/policies/staff/ethical_behav/comm_dev/comm_dev_guide.pdf
The following points have been made by one of our most esteemed directors on this subject
1. There is no formal DET policy concerning use of privately-owned devices within the DET network
2. The “ethical behaviour” policy applies explicitly to DET-owned devices, however the underlying principles of what a user can or cannot do apply to any kind of device (regarding user identities, passwords and behaviour)
3. We do not support registration of any privately owned device in a DET domain. Domain membership carries the implication that DET can configure and enforce policies on that device, which is legally dubious for a device that is fundamentally the person’s private property. I realise this limits the type of services that can be provided to a “web-only” connection for a private device, but the network and service design for DET local area networks contradicts the notion of a device where the user has administrative access.
4. Privately owned devices are routinely connected to the DET network in the sense of being used via a wireless or cabled connection to access HTTP-based services such as the DET portal. Whether this is encouraged or supported is largely a matter of local practice, and the policy position for DET as a whole would be “if there is business or educational benefit, AND the service is manageable within a Region’s scope of responsibility, AND there is minimal technical security risk in providing the service, THEN allow connection via a safe and secure method (such as ‘web-only’)”
